Inspiring Room – Maria from My Mini Abode

My name is Maria, I’m married to Lachlan, and we have a 3 year old boy called Max. I have just launched my mini abode, a Kids Interior Styling business providing e-design and in-house design and styling services. I’m really excited to be sharing my son, Max’s, room with you!

What inspired the decor of the room?

Max’s room is a genre I have coined ‘Monochrome Pop’!

One of the first pieces I invested in for Max’s room was a yellow Fab Habitat chevron rug. I adore yellow and chevron so I fell in love with this rug. I’m a big fan of colour but the room needed monochrome tones to off-set the colour pop of the yellow rug. Too much colour and it would have looked too busy and the rug would have just blended into the room. I wanted the rug to be a stand out. So Max’s room took on a black and white monochrome vibe, which was the perfect choice.

5 must haves for any kids room?

Storage, storage, storage! An absolute essential to hide all those pesky (often ugly!) toys. There are so many good looking storage options available these days, and done right the storage can become a stylish decor feature itself.

Furniture – that will grow with the child and last throughout the years. A good quality bed for example can be passed onto the next generation.

Lighting – different kinds to suit the different stages such as night time feeds, reading books, night light for pre-schoolers etc can make all the difference in a room.

Shelving – it’s versatile and makes good use of wall space. Shelving can hold books, store trinkets and display favourite items.

Soft Accessories – cushions, bed linen, blankets to inject personality and colour.

Favourite shops/websites for kids decor?

So many!! Alfie Wild, Little Me Little You, Leo and Bella, Greater Good, My Messy Room and Norsu Interiors.

I love supporting local Adelaide brands thinking globally such as Such Great Height Kids and Little Letter Lights Co.

I also can’t go past IKEA for basic and affordable essentials.
