Deanna 24, Joseph 35, Rani Kate 10 months old and number two due on the 2nd of July 2016

I think we are a pretty laid back family, we love the ocean, our little farm and spending time together enjoying LIFE

Location? Waroona, Western Australia (small country town which we both grew up in) but have just bought a block near the ocean in Florida beach, Mandurah Western Australia which we are building on this year

Occupation? Hairdresser

5 favourite things/items?

  1. My daughter Rani because she gives the best kisses
  2. My partner and lover Joseph because he is the best dad to rani and i would be lost without him
  3. Our pets! we have two dobermanns zed and candy, a Siamese cat (who is such a freak) his name is peanut and our two horses Hank and penny
  4. A pillow my beautiful mum made me with one of my dads t shirts (he passed away last year, he lost his battle to cancer 8 days after we welcomed rani into the world) the shirt she made it from was the shirt he wore the first time he held his little princess rani he just adored her so much.
  5. My makeup 😂 there is something about waking up and putting on a face of makeup to make you feel like you got your shit under control. Great for those days your feeling the pressures of motherhood getting under your skin

What are you most passionate about? L I F E. I was truly blessed to have the parents I have, losing my dad last year so soon after becoming a first time mum was probably the hardest and most overwhelming times of my life. Actually who am I kidding it’s still painful to think about. But my dad was so amazing, he honestly taught us all so much about LIFE. He battled for 16 long years with cancer and you know what he never complained or felt sorry for himself, he would often make jokes about what he was going through, things changed a lot when they decided he needed a tracheotomy for good, his response was “well I guess swimming is out” and when we were given the prognosis that his cancer had returned last February and was terminal they said that chemo may be an option his response was “when can we start, I can finally tick that off my bucket list and oh does that mean I will lose my hair?” ( he was almost completely bald already. Anyway my point is. Life is hard sometimes it is constantly throwing us curve balls and he taught us to keep our chin up and just get on with things, you can’t change some things but you can change how you feel about them. He equipped all of us (me and my brothers and sisters) with the tools to be Able to be strong independent human beings and to cope with LIFE and for that I’ll always be greatful for him. He was an amazing human being.

Do you have any hobbies/things you do in your downtime? I like to think I’m pretty creative, I enjoy drawing and painting something I haven’t done much since becoming a mum. I love to play sport, netball and basketball And even though I can be pretty lazy in the kitchen I love to cook when I’m in the right mood haha

How would you describe your family? We are a pretty cruisey I think Joseph and I just eased into being parents and just used our instinct on most things, I breastfed and we still co sleep. Rani is a bright happy and content little girl so I like to think we’ve done things right so far

How did becoming a mother change you? I think I’m still the same person under the mummy stuff, but that’s the best part becoming a mum adds more layers to you as a person. I think it’s made me a better person in some ways, made me able to love to much harder and also created some weaknesses I never had. I never was a worrier until I became a mum

What’s the best part about being a mother? The best part is when you feel like you can’t keep up and you feel like maybe your failing a little as a mum and then your baby holds out there arms and snuggles into your neck and gives you the biggest kisses, you realize you may not be perfect but to that little human you are the best person in the whole world. And how cool is that to have someone love you so much .

Naming your children is always so difficult (or maybe it was just me!) Was it easy to pick your child’s name and why did choose it? We didn’t know if we were having a boy or girl but I always liked the name Rani (rah-nee) it was just one of those names that stuck with me when I heard it. A few days after we learnt that Rani is an Indian name and means “queen” my dad thought that was very appropriate for her, his little queen. Her middle name Kate was a no brainer, I named her that after my best friend I lost to cancer when I was 15 so always knew I wanted to have a part of her in there somewhere

Has your personal style changed since becoming mother? If so how? Not really, I think my style is still the same and that identifys me as my own person.

Is there anything about motherhood that has surprised you? To be honest the deepness of that love you feel for them, you expect to love them but I don’t think you ever can prepare yourself for the weight that comes along with that love. To love someone so deeply that is frightens you is a pretty amazing thing.

Favourite thing to do as a family? Just spend time together doing whatever it is that makes us happy, whether it be cuddling on the lounge or going to the beach.

What has been the most memorable moment for you in motherhood so far? I think most mums would say the birth. What an amazing experience, something you can not explain and only understand the full meaning when you have gone through it yourself. I get teary now watching other women give birth on tv 😂 I think because it brings you back to that special moment of what you went through and all the crazy emotions that came along with it.

What are some baby essentials every new mother needs? I found for a newborn all she needed to be happy was my boobs and me 😂 you could buy a $10, 000 unicorn baby rocker, Trust me it will never be the same your baby just needs her/his mummy and that’s okay! And my yoli & Otis baby carrier was so handy too, made with organic materials it was super comfy and kept her close and happy for when I wanted my arms free

What are some of your favourite shops/websites for baby wear? I love clothes, This kids wardrobe is ridiculous
My favorites would have to be rock your baby,Hubble and duke, duke of London, Bonnie and Harlow, fawn and finch and bonds!

What is the one thing you want to teach your children? I just want my children to be happy! I want them to be confident and strong and independent, I want them to be able to cope with life and be good human beings.

Have any advice for newly mothers/mothers to be? Don’t be so hard on yourself! Throw out those silly books about how they should sleep all night and feed every 4 hours. It’s honestly a load of bull! Your baby is not a robot and all babies are different Rani was a hungry baby fed every two hours and sometimes it did my head in!! but she was hungry so I fed her! Follow your instincts your baby will tell you what they need I promise. Give yourself some credit that you know what’s best for them.
